What is Guild Wars Afterlife?
A $23.99 DLC for Guild Wars Reforged, out January 13, 2027, adding the island of Xotecha, the Unformed dungeon and skill-drafting combat.
Guild Wars Afterlife is a downloadable content pack for Guild Wars Reforged, the 2025 re-release of ArenaNet's 2005 online roleplaying game. It is not a fourth campaign and it is not a standalone product: the Steam page labels it Downloadable Content and states that it requires the base game. It adds one new region, one shape-shifting dungeon, a new story chapter, and a combat mode that throws out the skill-bar rules the original game was built on. It launches on January 13, 2027, at $29.99, with pre-purchase at $23.99.
The genre labels on the store are the same ones Reforged carries — Action, Adventure, Massively Multiplayer, RPG — and so are the feature tags: single-player, multiplayer, MMO, online PvP, co-op, full controller support, in-app purchases, family sharing. Afterlife does not turn Guild Wars into a different game. It adds a way to play the one that already exists, using characters you have already made.

A DLC on top of a re-release, not a sequel
The order of events matters here. Guild Wars Reforged shipped on December 3, 2025 at $19.99 and bundles the three original campaigns: Prophecies, Factions and Nightfall. Eye of the North and the Bonus Mission Pack remain separate purchases. Afterlife is sold on top of that, and its store page is explicit that Reforged is required.
That makes the real entry price higher than the DLC's price tag. If you own nothing, playing Afterlife on launch day costs $19.99 for Reforged plus $23.99 for the pre-purchase, or $43.98 total. If you wait past January 13, 2027, the same pair costs $49.98. If you already own Reforged, the DLC is the only new purchase.
| Piece | Price | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Guild Wars Reforged | $19.99 | Prophecies, Factions, Nightfall, base-game systems |
| Afterlife pre-purchase | $23.99 | Xotecha, the Unformed, skill drafting, new story |
| Afterlife at launch | $29.99 | Same content, standard price |
| Eye of the North | Sold separately | The 2007 expansion, not part of Reforged |
| Bonus Mission Pack | Sold separately | Bonus missions, not part of Reforged |
The six features, read closely
ArenaNet's announcement lists six features. Read closely, four of them are about the same idea — that a run is assembled and discarded rather than walked through once.
- Skill-drafting combat. You build a skill bar for that run from abilities that are not restricted to your primary and secondary professions.
- A dynamic dungeon. Maps, encounters and bosses are drawn per trip, across jungles, cenotes and floating ruins.
- A new story. The history of Xotecha, told across runs rather than in one campaign arc.
- Two reward tracks. Run rewards that change future runs, and permanent rewards usable outside Xotecha.
- New enemies. Nightmares and Ancient Golems, with the Cult of Odran behind the disturbance.
- Friends or henchmen. Runs work with players or with NPC henchmen.
The one thing the announcement does not mention is a new profession. Afterlife is built for the ten that already exist, which is why drafting across profession lines is the headline rather than a new class.
The base game it sits on is itself new. Reforged shipped on December 3, 2025, built with the studio 2weeks, and ArenaNet describes it as new life for a 21-year-old game: regular content updates, a new dungeon of its own, and the studio's first mobile release. That matters for Afterlife because the DLC is being sold into a client that is actively maintained rather than a museum re-release. The 2026 patch notes alone include a new merchant, four account upgrade bundles, controller targeting work and a new art pipeline.
Where it stops
Afterlife is not a replacement for Reforged, and it is not a remaster of anything. It does not include the campaigns; those come from Reforged. It does not remove your existing characters — the announcement says you bring them — but inside the Unformed your progression and inventory are stripped away for the duration of the run, which is the opposite of how the rest of Guild Wars works.
It is also not a separate mobile game. The same release is listed for PC, Steam, the Apple App Store and Google Play. Reforged already runs on phones and tablets, and its Google Play listing shows 100K+ downloads, so the mobile side of Afterlife lands on an app that already exists.
Who is making it
ArenaNet develops and publishes both Reforged and Afterlife; NCSOFT is listed as a publisher on the Reforged store page. Reforged was built with the studio 2weeks, and ArenaNet describes it as the first time the company has put Guild Wars on mobile. Afterlife is the first new DLC for the original game in almost twenty years, which the announcement itself calls out twice.
Support runs through ArenaNet rather than through the DLC's own page: the store lists help.guildwars.com and [email protected] as the contact points, which is worth knowing if a pre-purchase key does not apply cleanly. The legal line on both store pages reads the same — ©2005-2026 ArenaNet, LLC — which is a useful reminder that the game and the DLC share one publisher, one account system and one support queue.
